![]() Frontwoman Kate Davies is definitely the star of the show, with her gut-wrenching screams and unorthodox guitar playing however, drummer Josh Andrews and bassist/backing vocalist Luke Fabian provide a perfect rhythmic anchor while dishing out their own brand of manic energy. In the case of both songs, you never have an opportunity to breathe or relax until they finish.Īs was mentioned, however, the playing is unbelievably tight and purposeful despite how uncompromising the music is. The former lives up to its name, as each instrument delivers erratic and discordant staccato stabs in perfect unison meanwhile, the latter is a striking marriage of straightforward hardcore punk passages and strange out-of-left-field tempo shifts. Case in point: shorter cuts like “Stabbing Spiders” and “Vilified”, in which some of the record’s most abrasive and fast-paced moments are given the same intricacies and quirks as the longer tracks. As visceral as the music often is, it’s not visceral in a sloppy or haphazard way. Take the opener “Martyrs” for example amidst the unhinged vocals and ugly distortion, the dissonant guitar jabs and off-kilter drumming create a constant sense of unpredictability. One must not take this album’s “mathcore” tag lightly, as its complexity is really the glue that holds it together. Much like The Dillinger Escape Plan’s Calculating Infinity, the sections that initially come off as mindlessly chaotic are every bit as deliberate as any of the other moments it’s all about the big picture. ![]() The group’s first full-length affair Mirrors sees them combining elements of mathcore, grindcore, and powerviolence as they unleash what could best be described as “controlled brutality”. Needless to say, this UK trio could not have picked a better name to represent their music. It’s there to jar you out of contentment and imbue a lingering feeling of anxiety, even when nothing seems to be happening around you. one that provokes reactions of genuine unease and discomfort. ![]() No, the name Pupil Slicer is a different kind of repellent. It’s not like you’re approaching a band called Spermswamp or Pungent Stench, in which case you already suspect you’re in for something outright disgusting. Yet it’s not really a grotesque name per se. That’s the kind of band name that can repel prospective listeners in droves. ![]() It’s unclear what the immediate future holds for Pupil Slicer, but we get the feeling from this conversation that their rise to the top of the heavy music community is just beginning.Pupil Slicer. The pair swap stories about reacting to criticism and struggle with the prospect of having to maintain the forward momentum of any new project. On the first day of April 2021, Inside Music host James Shotwell connected with Pupil Slicer’s Kate Davies to discuss Mirrors, joining the Prosthetic Records family, and more. It would be chaos if the trio were any less talented, but as is - their precision is unmatched. Mirrors, like all the band’s material, channels that relatable rage into bombastic productions that rattle your bones and move your soul. They understand the frustration of trying to rise through society’s ranks and thrive in a world that doesn’t care about you. The beauty of a group like Pupil Slicer is that they get it. It’s a tornado of sound and angst that is sure to capture (and stranglehold) your attention. An amalgamation of mathcore, deathcore, and frenzied punk, the UK trio is taking the world by storm with their recently released debut album, Mirrors. ![]() Pupil Slicer is a force no one can contain. Kate Davies of UK band Pupil Slicer stops by Inside Music to discuss Mirrors, making music in a pandemic, and more. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() If you need to improve a relationship then you can feed their people, perform missions for them or sabotage enemy ships. As well as managing the space station, there are relationships to be managed external to the Starmancer too in the forms of other factions. There’s plenty of resources to be harvested and collected on your travels. There are different planets, moons, asteroids, and other space stations too. Starmancer is a fully dynamic universe that is randomly generated each time you play through the game. It could be a simple book or watch, but you have to be careful as not all collectibles are safe, they could start gathering cigarettes, drugs, and shivs. They develop relationships over time with others onboard and get jealous when good things happen to their enemies and sad if something happens to one of their friends.Īs well as personality traits, Colonists have unique inventories that fill up with items they like to collect. You have to take this into account if you have different classes of Colonists on board over time, as the upper class may not like mingling with the lower classes. If one has had a bad day, then they will talk to others and that bad feeling can spread throughout the Starmancer. If you are not careful then they will rebel and it could even go as far as trying to destroy you… so it’s best to try your best to keep them as happy as possible.Ĭolonists talk to each other as well, which can affect morale. They have feelings and get upset if something nasty happens to one of them. They will need regular Oxygen, food, comfort items like beds and storage, and you can decide whether to give them a day off or not. Our little humans need looking after too as you have to take into account how tired they are and their mood. It’s all about finding and creating the right personality types that gel together well with a good mix of skills to find the perfect balance on the Starmancer. Some like to build, research, even carry things around, whereas your created humans also have things they dislike too. First off you are alone, but this isn’t too much of an issue as you can create humans with a variety of personality traits. When you first start in the game you’ll design your core, wake up and run through various tutorials to get to grips with the systems and gameplay loops. ![]() You can also create hangars so ships can be sent out on trading missions, which is useful to create cash to invest back into the growth of the Starmancer. This includes bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms, and farms to produce food. If you leave the humans alone, they will simply sleep on the floor, but you can decide to create luxury living quarters too.Īs you grow your Colony, your crew is going to need the basics to survive. For example, you can create a fully functioning mining colony and put your crew to work, or you could create a resort so they can relax in peace. It’s entirely down to you what type of station you design. If you have a happy and motivated workforce, it’s going to be much easier to survive the brutal nature of space. You can build extra rooms, equipment, paint the walls and add furnishings for your humans. At the start, there’s only a couple of rooms, as well as an outside area where you can launch research missions. The Starmancer is yours to customize fully. You are not alone in the Solar system either, with plenty of other factions to trade with, there are distant worlds to discover and explore in this procedurally generated universe as well as enemies to prevent from taking over the Starmancer. ![]() There’s been a tragedy on Earth and it’s forced all humanity into the stars. ![]() ![]() ![]()

![]() It’s a nice addition to the voice mixer and certainly a useful mod. I added that signal to the mixing section with it’s own level control. Whether that was necessary or not, I have nu freaking clue. I simply took that signal, put it through an opamp configured as a voltage follower, so It wouldn’t interfere with whatever was going on in the sub octave modulator. The CD4013 used to divide the incoming frequency and thus achieve a sub octave. Pin 2 of the CD4013 (A17) output a square wave an octave below the guitar input. The Square Sub oscillator works on the same principle. I’ve added a level control as well so one could blend, say some noise, into the signal before it enters the filter. So you could easily add an external input to the mixer by making an input over a 10K resistor to the summing point on the mixer. It might not be that obvious from the schematics, but the voice mixer is set up as a simple mixer where A10 is the summing opamp. ![]() I also suspect different units to behave slightly different here so you might need to adjust to taste. You should try out a bit of other resistor values, 47K will allow for a bit more extreme sounds. I also added a switch to disable this mod. ![]() What I’ve did was simply connect the output of A12 (pin6) back to the input of A10 (pin 2) over a 56K resistor. It has the tendency to start going ape-shit and turn into an overdriven mess, so a bit of subtlety is at it’s place to find the right resistor. This one is again a fairly simple one to implement and extends the resonance control up to the point of oscillation. I’ve ordered a few CA3094’s to replace it, we’ll see whether that works or not. Luckily it can be replaced (at least in the filter) by an LM13700 and work fine. I managed to kill one two while working on the filter. ![]() I didn’t pursued this issue any further as I didn’t really found it that big of a problem, and I feared trying to solve this would really be quite an undertaking.īe careful with the EH1040 IC’s though. At short rates the filters drops lower then on long rates. That fixed the issue but now the ‘rate’ control also has an influence on the filter range. To counter that I used an opamp (non-inverting) to amplify the control voltage going to A10,A11,A12 over the 3.3k resistors and coming from A13. The filter consists of 3 identical stages, changing capacitors c25, c26, c27 from 33nF to 68nF shifted down the range, however, not only the bottom end, also the top end. IMHO it really needed to go down a lot deeper, especially if you want to use it with synths. Sending white noise through it I found out it’s range was about 700Hz-18KHz. I did like the quirky filter but it just hadn’t enough ‘Oomph’ to it. I found the filter a bit lacking in range when used for synths. This one is a bit more invasive to the machine, so it might not be for everyone. #Eh microsynth trigger install#Just install a switch between this and the filter output and you’re good to go. As you can see in the pic, output 6 from A11 provides a band pass output. I don’t know whether it’s useful for a bass guitar, but it sure is for running synths through the thing. #Eh microsynth trigger mod#This is a really simple mod to perform and opens up a whole new range of sounds. The filter really can get some 303-like action going on, especially when you use the square wave generator. It should give an idea what the unit is capable of when applied to synths. ![]() I recorded some tweaking and went through more or less all the settings except the external inputs and triggers. It starts with a clean version of a saw wave riff generated with a Korg Gadget app. #Eh microsynth trigger mods#I’ll try to address the implementation of some mods in this article. You’ll can find the schematics of the EHX Bass Micro Synth easily enough on the web, but for the lazy, click here. Things could do with a bit of tweaking here or there, but that’s up to personal taste. But I’m pretty happy with the results so far.
